How to Disable AI Overview on Google

Four methods to remove AI-generated summaries from your search results.

Why Disable AI Overview?

Google's AI Overview (previously called SGE - Search Generative Experience) shows AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. While sometimes useful, many users prefer traditional results because:

Method 1: Use Unslop Search (Easiest)

The simplest solution - just search on our site and we handle everything automatically.

Bonus: You can switch between Google, DuckDuckGo, Brave, and other search engines - all with AI filtering applied.

Method 2: Add udm=14 to URL

For manual control, add &udm=14 to any Google search URL.

Example

Normal Google search:

https://www.google.com/search?q=best+coffee+shops

With AI disabled:

https://www.google.com/search?q=best+coffee+shops&udm=14

The udm=14 parameter forces Google's "Web" tab, which excludes AI Overviews, videos, and knowledge panels. Learn more about udm=14.

Create a Bookmark

Add this as a bookmark and use it to search:

https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14

Replace %s with your search term, or set it up as a custom search engine in your browser.

Method 3: Add -ai to Your Query

A simple trick: append -ai to the end of your search query.

Example

Instead of searching:

best coffee shops

Search:

best coffee shops -ai

The -ai is a search operator that excludes pages containing "ai" which often triggers Google to skip the AI Overview. However, this method is less reliable than udm=14 and may filter out some legitimate results that mention AI.

Note: This method may stop working as Google changes their algorithms. Use udm=14 for more reliable results.

Method 4: Browser Extension

Install our browser extension to automatically filter AI from every search across multiple search engines.

Features

  • Works on Google, DuckDuckGo, and Brave Search
  • Automatically applies AI-disabling parameters
  • Choose your preferred method (udm=14 or -ai)
  • No data collection - completely private

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off AI Overview on Google?

The most reliable method is adding &udm=14 to your Google search URL. Alternatively, use Unslop Search which does this automatically, or install a browser extension.

What is udm=14?

It's a URL parameter that forces Google to show only "Web" tab results, removing AI Overviews, featured snippets, and other rich results. Learn more.

Can I permanently disable Google AI Overview?

Google doesn't provide a setting to disable AI Overview in your account. However, by setting Unslop Search as your default search engine or using our extension, you get AI-free results automatically on every search.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes! You can use unslopsearch.com on any mobile browser. On Android, you can also install it as a PWA (tap the menu and "Add to Home Screen"). Browser extensions work on some mobile browsers like Firefox for Android.

Will Google block these methods?

The udm=14 parameter is an official Google feature for their "Web" tab filter, so it's unlikely to be removed. The -ai trick is less reliable and may stop working.

What about other search engines?

Unslop Search also supports DuckDuckGo, Brave, Startpage, Qwant, and Mojeek - each with their own AI-disabling parameters applied.
